Why we built this — and why it matters.

🌍 Why Litter Is a Real Problem

New York City generates millions of pounds of street litter every year. Litter isn't just ugly — it clogs drains and causes flooding, harms animals, pollutes our soil and waterways, and makes neighborhoods feel unsafe and unloved.

Most people want cleaner streets, but there was never a simple, fast way to report litter from your phone. Borough Scan changes that.

🎯 Our Goal

Borough Scan gives every New Yorker — in every borough — a simple tool to fight litter in their neighborhood. Take a photo, log the type of waste, and submit it in under 30 seconds.

Over time, those reports build a real picture of where litter is worst across the five boroughs — giving communities, schools, and city agencies the data they need to take action.

📖 How to Use Borough Scan

  1. 1.Go to the Scan tab and take a photo of litter near you.
  2. 2.Choose your borough, then select the nearest street or location.
  3. 3.Select the waste type — Plastic, Paper, Glass, Metal, Organic, or Other.
  4. 4.Hit Submit — earn 10 pts per report (15 for Glass or Metal)!
  5. 5.Check the Map and My Impact tabs to track your progress.
